ONEONTA – Keith S. McCarthy, 76, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007 at home surrounded by family after a brief illness.
He was born June 25, 1930 in Tonawanda, the son of Horace and Grace (Dillon) McCarthy.
Keith married Cynthia Lorenz on July 6, 1957 at the Methodist Church in Sharon Springs. They have made their residence in Oneonta for 47 years.
He graduated from Tonawanda High School and the State University College of Oneonta. He received his Master's Degree from the State University College of Buffalo. Keith is remembered as an outstanding High School and College basketball player being inducted into the College at Oneonta Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Keith taught at the Bugbee School and at the State University College of Oneonta until retirement in 1991. He was a dedicated teacher who will always be remembered by his students.
He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the United States National Guard and the Oneonta Elks Club. He was the recipient of the Elk of The Year in 1997-1998.
Keith is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cynthia; four children, Kathleen McCarthy of Lockport, Susan (James) Benjamin of Oneonta, Kevin (Leslie) McCarthy of Fairport, and William (Katherine) McCarthy of Boston, MA; five grandchildren, Nicole, Kaitlyn and Kiersten Coon, and Nicholas and Megan Benjamin; a brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Joan McCarthy of Williamsville; a sister-in-law, Muriel McCarthy of North Tonawanda and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Richard.
He was a loving father and dedicated husband. He also had a wonderful sense of humor, which his children, grandchildren and many friends will always remember. In Keith's own words, he said to just say, "He's Gone".
Friends are invited to join a celebration of Keith's life at St. James Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter, as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at St. James Columbarium, with a reception to follow in the Great Hall at the church.
