Otego - Kevin Michael Mroczkowski was called home by his Savior on 3 July 2019, after a three-month fight against cancer. Kevin was in the company of family at the time of death, and he was frequently visited by cousins, nieces and nephews and friends during his illness.
Kevin was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 2 March, 1950, the son of Stanislaus S. and Margaret E. Mroczkowski. He grew up in Queens, New York, and shortly after graduating from Far Rockway High School, he served his country in the Army. He was trained as a medical corpsman and during the Vietnam War he served at the 6 th Convalescent Center in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. After his release from active duty he attended SUNY Delhi, receiving an associate degree. Kevin held positions with Conrail and with the New York Throughway Authority as a bridge repair specialist. He lived in Newburgh, New York, and spent the last ten years living in Otego.
Kevin joined the New York National Guard, providing aid to civil authority on several occasions during floods and major storms. On 11 September 2001, he was sent immediately to New York City, where he spent the next several weeks at the site of the World Trade Center, providing security. Over the next few years he had other periods of active duty at bridges and railway stations in New York City.
Kevin was very active in his parish of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta, where he enjoyed working in the Food Pantry and as a greeter at Mass. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, travelling, and spending time with family and playing pinochle with friends.
Kevin is survived by his former wife, Elizabeth Panessa; son, Christopher (Deanna) and granddaughter, Lucille; by brothers, Stanislaus (Marcella), Dennis (Barbara) and Terrence; and by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on 7 July.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, at 10:15 AM on 8 July, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, as celebrant.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
