December 22, 1970 – March 5, 2021
Schenevus- Kurt A. Prager, 50, passed away peacefully March 5, 2021 after a long health battle.
He was the son of Henry A. and Mildred J. (McMillen) Prager, both of whom have predeceased him.
Kurt married the love of his life and soulmate Karen A. Prager in 2010. They have been inseparable.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his beloved dogs, Bailey (his little buddy) and Coco; his brother, August Prager and his wife, Jackie. Kurt loved his nieces and nephews, Lia, Logan and Lucas Prager and Katie, Holly and Aidan Hutchinson. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Joyce Astheimer; sister-in-law, Leigh and husband, Chris Hutchinson.
Kurt grew up in Schenevus and graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central School in 1989. He was blessed with musical talent. He played the trumpet while in school and was part of the Jazz Attack and competed in state competitions. He briefly attended Herkimer County Community College.
Kurt began his law enforcement career on November 21, 1991, with The Otsego County Sheriff's Department as a Corrections Officer. He put himself through the Police Academy, later becoming a New York State Certified General Topics Instructor and Firearms Instructor. In August 2007, Kurt transferred to New York State Courts as a Court Officer and New York State Office of Court Administration Firearms Instructor. He loved working in law enforcement and will be greatly missed by those that knew him.
Kurt was a member of a number of Masonic Organizations, Schenevus Valley Lodge as a Master Mason, mentored by Charles Holmes, Otsego Lodge as Worshipful Master, and Otsego Hartwick Arbutus Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star.
His generosity, social personality and love of bad jokes made him a joy to be around. He was a true friend. Kurt was an avid outdoorsman. He loved camping, roaming around the woods on his four-wheeler with his dog, Bailey, and having all of his friends around the campfire.
A Memorial Masonic service honoring Kurt's life will be held 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the Vets Club/VFW, 16 Main St., Schenevus. There will be visitation following the service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
