Obituary

Lawrence A. Mirarchi, 81, of Oneonta passed away on March 2, 2022, in Westchester, NY.

Larry was born in Brooklyn on April 25, 1940, to Frank Mirarchi and Mary (Marrano) Mirarchi, who had immigrated to New York from southern Italy.

Larry grew up speaking Italian and surrounded by a large extended family in Prospect Heights. He learned English as a second language when he started kindergarten and spent much of his childhood exploring Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and the Brooklyn Public Library. Larry attended Brooklyn Technical High School and Brooklyn College, then earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

As a professor at Hartwick College for more than three decades, Larry taught general chemistry, physical chemistry, and philosophy of science; served as chair of the philosophy department; made lifelong friendships; and mentored younger colleagues. Also a photographer, he had a passion for the beauty of the local landscape and a singular ability to capture the movement of light in his compositions. His photos have been exhibited locally and continue to be shown at the Artisans' Guild in Oneonta.

A beloved and devoted brother, father, and grandfather, Larry is survived by his brother, Anthony Mirarchi, of Oneonta; his son, Michael Mirarchi, and daughter-in-law, Robin Eiseman, of Philadelphia; his daughter, Elizabeth Mirarchi, and son-in-law, Julian Rozzell, Jr., of Brooklyn; his grandsons, Drew Mirarchi and Carlo Rozzell; and a loving extended family, including his cousins and Maggie and Allan Schramm.

Larry loved opera and classical music. He served on the board of the Oneonta Concert Association and enjoyed helping to produce classical programming. An avid naturalist, he visited the Adirondacks every summer with his children.

Visiting hours with the family will take place on Saturday, March 19, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St.., Oneonta. The family asks that guests please wear masks for this indoor gathering.
