Leland Charles
Horstmann
January 30, 1956 – July 28, 2025
Worcester, NY – Leland Charles Horstmann, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 28, 2025, at Chestnut Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, New York, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 30, 1956, in Midland, Texas, Leland was the second son of Lane and Lillian (Thompson) Horstmann. He grew up in a warm and caring household as the middle child, between his older brother Lane Jr. and younger sister Lorinda. From a young age, Leland developed a love for the outdoors, participating in scouting and organized sports—especially baseball. He had a lifelong passion for mechanical design and architecture, and regularly attended church, values and interests that shaped his path through life.
A dedicated fan of the Houston Astros since the team's founding, Leland joined the Astros Buddy Club in high school and was thrilled to witness Nolan Ryan's fifth no-hitter in person—an experience he spoke of often. Even after moving away from Houston, his devotion to the team never waned. He returned regularly for playoff and World Series games.
Leland met the love of his life, Linda Ann Clinton, during high school. They both attended The University of Texas, where their relationship deepened. The two were married on August 20, 1977, in Houston, and later welcomed two sons while living there.
Leland earned a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from The University of Texas and remained a proud Longhorn supporter throughout his life. Professionally, he worked for various architectural firms in Houston and Princeton, NJ, before joining AT&T as a corporate architect. His early work involved designing telecommunication infrastructure in Asia, particularly Thailand, where he lived on and off for several years. He remained with AT&T for the rest of his career, managing major domestic projects across the U.S. until his retirement. In his later years, Leland and Linda settled on a peaceful farm in Decatur, NY, where he enjoyed the beauty of nature, long walks with their dogs, and visits with family and friends.
Leland will be remembered as a kind, loyal, and generous man. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, caring brother and uncle, and a steadfast friend. His quiet strength, tolerance, and patience made him a respected mentor to many. He remained active in scouting throughout his life, serving as den leader and scoutmaster for his sons' troop. His generosity extended beyond his community—he was a lifelong blood, plasma, and platelet donor, and gave the ultimate gift through an altruistic kidney donation to a stranger.
A supporter of the arts and humanities, Leland frequently donated to the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and lived his life with compassion and integrity, guided by his faith.
Leland is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; his sons, George Christopher and Kyle; his granddaughter, Milan; his siblings, Lane Jr. (Linda) and Lorinda Boyd (Chris); his sister-in-law, Cathy Bryant; and his nieces and nephews, Carrie, Travis, Michelle, Emily, and Katherine.
He was predeceased by his parents and his nephew, Karl.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Houston, Texas, where Leland's parents were laid to rest.
