WEST ONEONTA – Leon E. Woodcock Jr., 86, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born October 5, 1922 in Oneonta, the son of Leon E. Woodcock Sr. and Myra (Schutt) Woodcock.
Leon was a graduate of Oneonta High School.
He was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1941 to 1965, during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He obtained the rank of Master Chief Shipfitter and Second Class Diver.
Leon married Mary Kordich on October 10, 1944 in Long Beach, CA.
He and his family moved back to Oneonta in 1965. He retired from the United States Post Office in West Oneonta, where he was clerk.
Leon was a member of the Oneonta Sportsman Club and once served as the West Oneonta Fire Commissioner. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and was the number one fan of the West Oneonta horse shoe league.
He is survivors by his wife, Mary Woodcock of West Oneonta; a daughter, Carrie Woodcock and her husband, David Hedden of Ann Arbor, MI; a son, Paul Woodcock of West Oneonta; two grandsons, Adrian and Byron Hedden; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Woodcock; a niece and three nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Woodcock Peter in 1982 and a brother, Robert Woodcock.
A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at the West Oneonta Cemetery on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, retired, officiating. Following the service a reception will be held at the West Oneonta Fire Department.
