ONEONTA – Leona M. Reed, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2009 at her home.
She was born December 23, 1915, in Hobart, the daughter of Benjamin and Lena (Dexter) VanHoesen.
She married Edwin W. Reed on April 25, 1935 at the West Oneonta Baptist Church. He passed away in January of 1951.
After the tragic loss of her husband, one of her greatest accomplishments was successfully raising her two daughters.
Mrs. Reed was at one time employed for Oneonta Dress Factory as a seamstress.
She was a member of the Pindars Corners Fireman's Auxiliary and the West Davenport Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.
Mrs. Reed is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy and Robert Zeh of Oneonta and Maxine Austin of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Bradly and Amy Zeh of Oneonta and Kristin Zeh of Orlando, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Britten Zeh; a brother, Norman VanHoesen of Sea Brook, MD and a sister, Mildred Knapp of Glenville and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Bennett VanHoesen and two sisters, Hilda Cook and Isabel Majkut.
Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 with family members present at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday, June 22nd at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Donations in loving memory of Mrs. Reed may be made to the Pindars Corners Fire Department.
