He was born March 16, 1937 in Bloomville, the son of Frank and Gladys (Hitt) Burdick.

Leonard married Mary Ellen Walker on September 26, 1959 in Ithaca.

He graduated from SUNY Delhi with an associate's degree in accounting.

Leonard worked as a local banker, starting with Oneonta Savings and Loan, and retiring as an Executive Vice President from Astoria Federal Savings and Loan, after 33 years.

He retired from the United States National Guard with the rank of Captain, after 21 years of service.

He served on the board of several community organizations, including the Oneonta Elks Club #1312, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, the Oneonta Country Club, the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion Post 259.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Burdick of Oneonta; two sons, Dan Burdick of Ithaca, Brian and wife, Shelly Burdick of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Kelly Burdick of Ithaca and Xander Burdick of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Mildred and husband, Thomas Camb; brothers, Alden and wife, Janice Burdick and Ford Burdick; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Wilson.

Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. The funeral service will follow at 11a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, pastor at the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
