Obituary

Oneonta – Leroy W. Perry, 81, passed away on July 11, 2014 at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.



Leroy was born on October 12, 1932 in Oneonta, the son of the late Beryl and Marie (Bramsen) Perry. He grew up in Oneonta and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1952, where he played football, basketball and baseball. Leroy also played baseball for the Oneonta Braves, and played softball and volleyball in the City of Oneonta Leagues. He was an avid bowler and golfer.



In 1950, Leroy joined Company G National Guard and later transferred to the 978th Ordinance Outfit. He held the rank of Sergeant First Class until his honorable discharge in 1959.



On July 15, 1957, Leroy began working for the New York Telephone Company, which later became NYNEX. He worked as a cable splicer's helper, a lineman and then as a cable splicer until his retirement on December 30, 1991.



Leroy belonged to the BPOE Elks Lodge 1312, American Legion Post 259, Sixth Ward Athletics' Club and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Leroy was an on-call fireman with the Oneonta Fire Department for 10 years, later becoming a life member.



Leroy loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and helping them in any way he could.



Leroy is survived by his four children: Laurine Jennings; Linda Perry and Russell Bauer; Diane Perry; and Michael and Denise (McNeilly) Perry. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren: Scott (Shelia) Thomas; Stephanie Hempstead; Ron Pleban (Hannah Jacobsen); Katie MacDowell (Steven Chichester); Ashley Pleban (Joe Henselder); Gregory Jennings; Cassandra Morales; and Taylor, Morgan and Meghan Perry; and his great-grandchildren: Nathan and Zachary Hyde; Bradley MacDowell; Leah Chichester and Cole Thomas.



He was pre-deceased by his parents, his beloved aunt, Edna Perry who raised him and son-in-law, Edward Jennings.



Calling hours will be held 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz Street, Oneonta. At 6 p.m. there will be an Elks Lodge of Sorrows service.



A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the funeral home with the Reverend Teressa Sivers officiating.



Interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
