WORCESTER – Lewis Horning, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born July 23, 1915 in Canada, the son of Frederick and Mabel Horning.
Lewis married Ulah VanBuren on June 23, 1946 in Richmondville. She predeceased him on December 3, 2008.
Lewis was a butcher at the Grange Market in Worcester, he then opened Lewis' Market which he operated out of his home in Worcester for many years. He also worked for Worcester Central School as School Bus Driver and Custodian. After retirement he enjoyed woodworking and helping raise his grandchildren.
Lewis was a very active member of the Second Baptist Church in Worcester and the Worcester Fire Department.
He is survived by his two sons, Robert and wife, Janna Horning of North Carolina and George and wife, Franja Horning of Richmondville; grandchildren, Jillian Horning, Brian Horning, Justine Fuss, Maxwell Horning, and Kristen Walters; great-grandchildren, George Lewis Horning, Sage and Lyla Walters; cousins, Gerald and Shirley Hoover of Canada and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
A Memorial Service with Fireman's honors will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Second Baptist Church, Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, pastor, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
