ONEONTA - Lydia (Lincoln) Hornstra, 94, passed away Monday, February 28, 2011 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta after a brief illness.
Born in Nutley, NJ, August 15, 1916, Lydia was the daughter of Walter O. and Minnyetta (Howland) Lincoln. After graduating from Upsala College with a degree in literature, Lydia married Nicholas Hornstra on January 29, 1945, and raised her family of five children in Pompton Plains, NJ. While attending Riverdale Bible Church, where her late husband Nicholas was a deacon, she held Bible classes in her home, where they loved to host visiting missionaries and ministers. Her love of travel took her all over the United States and Canada, and to Israel and England.
Lydia was descended from farming families in Charlotteville and surrounding areas on her father's side, and from early American settlers, including Revolutionary War participants, on her mother's side. Since 1990, she had lived in the Oneonta area, first in Franklin, and then in Davenport with her son, Robert and his family. While living in Franklin, she attended the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church. For the last few years, she was a resident of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by her children, Dorothy Newcomb and her husband, Jack of Clarksville, TX, Barbara Hornstra of Branchville, NJ, Deborah Owens and her husband, Steven of Auburn, NY, Robert Lincoln Hornstra and his wife, Connie of Davenport, NY, and Elizabeth Hornstra of Yorkville, IL; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., where the Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., with the Rev. John Grenier, pastor at Oneonta Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Charlotteville Cemetery immediately after the service.
