WORCESTER – Marjorie Marie Hall Alexander, 102, passed away at home on Monday, July 21, 2008 with her loving family around her.
She was born February 4, 1906 in Davenport, the daughter of James D. and Eva (Preston) Hall.
Marjorie married George W. Alexander of Franklin, at his parent's home in Franklin on April 16, 1927. They started their married life in Hoosick Falls, where George purchased an existing insurance business. Three of their children were born in Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, George Jr., William and Mary.
In September 1936, George and Marjorie moved to Worcester and purchased the family home of Manley and Amanda Preston, Marge's grandparents, located on Main Street. George opened an insurance business in there and in 1938 Norma was born.
Marjorie was a "stay at home" Mom and very active in the community, including being a plane spotter during World War II. She was a member of the Friendship Group, Worcester Women's Club, Worcester Historical Society, Worcester United Methodist Church, Worcester United Methodist Women, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Marjorie could tell many, many stories of her life starting out with living without electricity or running water, dirt roads, and horse and buggies or sleighs. Marge has seen this world change from that to computers, space age and beyond.
In 2006, Marge celebrated her 100th birthday, with letters from Governor George Pataki, President George W. Bush, Senator James Seward and Assembly Marc Butler. She greeted over 250 people at her home at an open house held in her honor. This included her three children, all 10 grandchildren, and almost all of her great grandchildren attending.
Marge loved sitting on her front porch visiting with friends and neighbors. She will be missed by all her family and friends and be remembered as the lady who could remember everything. If you couldn't remember something, just ask Marge. At 102 she also loved playing solitaire on the computer (for hours), watching the Yankees in season, and other TV programs. She also loved to read. She was a very kind and loved by anyone that knew her.
Marge is survived by her children, William (Leona) Alexander, Mary (Randall) Hallenbeck and Norma Ralph; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Marge was predeceased by her husband, George; their first baby, George Jr.; brothers and sisters, Amanda, Walter, Leonard, Mildred and MJ and a grandson, Randall Hallenbeck, Jr.
