WESTFORD – Mary Caroline Gartung, 94, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 12, 1915 in Manhattan, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Doyle) Donahue.
She married William H. Gartung on April 15, 1934 at the Church of the Precious Blood in Astoria.
Mrs. Gartung's real joy was her husband, family and faith. She was an active member of St. Mary's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Arista Club and the Mensa Club.
During World War II, Mary owned a chicken farm, "Caroline's Eggs". She also worked on the family dairy farm, as well as the Oneonta Dress Factory as a seamstress and was a Senior Aid at Bassett Hospital.
When her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling. Mary often said she never met a stranger. She welcomed everyone to her home and always had room at the table for one more. After her husband's passing in 1992, she and her family opened "Willy's Farm and Cider Mill", where you could find some of her finest baked goods.
She is survived by her children, William and Betty Gartung of Medford, Charles and Barbara Gartung of Riverside, CA, Ernest and Kit Gartung of Smyrna, TN, Carolyn "Cookie" Cooper and Roger Miner of Morrisonville, Christine Gartung of East Worcester, Thomas and Linda Gartung of Barton, Mary Allen of Westford, Virginia Wiggins of Westford, Linda and Douglas Clements of Westford, Theresa and David Clements of Westford, Joseph Gartung of Schenevus, and Peter and Kerri Gartung of New Lisbon; 52 grandchildren; 91 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Papadem and Ann Duffee; brother-in-law, John H. Gartung; sisters-in-law, Nora Donahue and Cleo Gartung; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, William; a son, John A. Gartung, Sr.; sister, Bernice Gartung; brother, Charles Donahue; 3 great-grandchildren, Brittany and Bianca Toombs and Henry Sanna; and two sons-in-law, George Cooper and Nick Allen.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 17, 2010, 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Worcester, with the Rev. Ronald Green, MM as celebrant.
Interment will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester.
