ONEONTA – Mary E. Grogan, 82, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 7, 1929 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Patrick and Johanna Theresa (Reilly) Burke.
She married John Leslie on April 19, 1952. He predeceased her on March 8, 1956. She then married Thomas Grogan on October 12, 1959. He predeceased her on May 31, 1976.
Mrs. Grogan lived in West Hempstead from 1966 to 2007, than moved to Oneonta. She worked for the Hempstead School District as a Licensed Teaching Assistant, retiring in 1992.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta, the Alter Rosary Society and The Young at Heart. While living on Long Island, she was a member of the Cleft Palate Association of Long Island, the Hospitality Chairperson and President of the Mature Single's of St. Thomas, St. Thomas The Apostle Church in West Hempstead, a CCD teacher, a 4-H Leader and a Girl Scout Leader.
Mrs. Grogan is survived by her children, Kathleen (David) Jones of Oneonta, Maureen Leslie of Oneonta, Thomas (LyAnn) Grogan of Bangor, ME, Robert (Margaret) Grogan of West Hempstead; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 5 brothers and 1 sister.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Bernard Ampong, as celebrant.
Interment will take place at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury, Mass. at a later date.
