Obituary

ONEONTA – Mary J. Nesbitt, 96, passed away February 21, 2015 at the Focus Nursing and Rehabilitation at Otsego.

She was born December 17, 1918 in Oneonta, the daughter of Benjamin Murley Johns Jr. and Mary Louise (Powell) Johns.

Mary graduated from Westtown School in Westtown, PA and attended American University, Washington, DC.

She married Clarence "Gus" Munson Nesbitt in Wilmington, DE in 1939. He predeceased her on June 7, 1976.

Following her husband's death, she worked as an Interior Decorator for 20 years.

Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, where her father was once the pastor, and also the Oneonta Country Club.

She was an avid golfer and earned the designation of Life Master of Bridge.

She is survived by her children, Betty Nesbitt Robinson of Burlington Flats, Duncan Powell Nesbitt and wife, Rebecca of Wilmington, NC and Benjamin Clark Nesbitt of West Oneonta; 7 grandchildren, Susan Stewart of Pittsburgh, PA, Douglas Robinson of Mesa, AZ, Jennifer Haack of Painted Post, Powell Nesbitt of Oneonta, Stephen Nesbitt of Vero Beach, FL, Jennifer McCarron of Frederick, MD, and Kristin Silon of Frederick, MD; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Katherine Johns of Manlius and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by three brothers, Robert P. Johns, Benjamin M. Johns and Willard L. Johns and a sister, Ruth Elizabeth Johns.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta. Burial will follow at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
