Mary B. Otvos, 94, passed away, Friday, November 7, 2008 at her residence.

She was born September 2, 1914 in East Orange, NJ; the daughter of Christopher and Rose (Mangan) Broe.

Mary married Joseph F. Otvos on June 22, 1940 in Oneonta. He predeceased her on October 20, 1970.

Graduating from Flushing Nursing School, Mary was a Registered Nurse with a Masters Degree from SUCO in education. She worked at Homer Folks TB Hospital from 1953-1973 and the Oxford Veteran's Home where she retired in 1978.

She was a member of the NYS Nurses Association, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and St. Mary's Altar Rosary Society in Oneonta. Mary was a member of the first graduating class of St. Mary's School in Oneonta.

Mary is survived by 2 daughters, Patricia Townsend and her husband Craig of Oneonta and Ann Otvos of Colliersville; 2 sons, Joseph Otvos of Cooperstown and Peter Otvos and his wife Shirley of Mattydale, NY; 2 grandchildren, Maura Townsend of Philadelphia and Penni Davis of Syracuse; 4 great grandchildren, Samantha Davis of Syracuse and Shannon, Peter and Mona Otvos of Mattydale, NY; 2 brothers, Thomas Broe and his wife Delores of Georgia and James Broe and his wife Joyce of Colliersville; 1 sister, Betty Priore and her husband James of Michigan; 2 sister-in-laws, Lorraine and Ruth Broe, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Jerry Broe; sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Thomas Natoli and her grandson, Peter J. Otvos.

Mary was a role model for all of us – full of energy and determination, always busy and productive, and interested in everything. Her tenacity was incredible – others would have given up long ago, with all the illness she had to face. She was bright-eyed, mentally and spiritually strong woman, who knew her own mind, had vigorous opinions, and, despite her physical infirmity, expressed herself with humor, affection, and occasionally, indignation. She loved to read, and listen to classical music, and most of all, loved her family around her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 14, 2008 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Joseph Benintende as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.
