ONEONTA – Norman Jay Quackenbush, 79, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at his home.
He was born January 13, 1929 in Oneonta, the son of Norman A. and Virginia (Sloat) Quackenbush.
Norman lived in Oneonta all his life. He was employed by the D& H Railroad, working as a car repairman and inspector. He was a member of the Oneonta Fire Department for 30 years. While in the department, he worked with Walt Morrison in communications for the fire departments in Otsego County. He helped organize the first "Fill the Boot" campaign for MDA telethon and the first Fireman's Convention held in Oneonta. Norman was also on scene for the D&H Railroad explosion in Colliersville. During the summer months he painted houses, and did electrical work part time, throughout the year.
Norman was an avid science fiction reader and enjoyed working with computers and photography.
He is survived by his wife, Connie (Simmons) Quackenbush; 5 children, Sherry and Harold Utter of Oneonta, Stephen Quackenbush of Franklin, Norma and Arthur Clarke of South Gilboa, Daniel Quackenbush of Florida, Curtis and Christine Quackenbush of Oneonta; two brothers, Jack and Carol Quackenbush of Syracuse and Gary and Maria Quackenbush of California; 4 grandchildren, Stephen Oakley of Oneonta, Stephanie, April and Joshua Quackenbush of Florida and several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a devoted brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronald and Jacqueline Simmons of Oneonta.
He was predeceased by a step-son, William Oakley and two grandchildren, Daniel Quackenbush Jr. and Holden Quackenbush.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. A Fireman's Memorial Service will begin at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
