O. Charlie Koenig, a long time Oneonta resident, passed away on March 20, 2017 at the New York State Veteran's Home, Oxford, New York.
He was born March 26, 1925 In Munster-Lager, Germany, the fourth child of Julius and Emma (Bokelmann) Koenig.
Charlie was a graduate of Delaware Academy High School, Class of 1942.
He married Johanna Goldsmith on September 16, 1943 in St. Augustine, FL, both at the age of 18 years old, and they enjoyed 64 wonderful and adventurous years of marriage.
Charlie was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent having served as the Communications Chief in his Battalion in the Philippines and was one of the first troops to enter into Japan after the war. He was awarded five medals for his service.
Charlie went on to receive an Associates Degree in Agricultural Economics from Cornell
University.
He worked for Empire Livestock Marketing Co-operative for 20 years, in various capacities, including manager of 5 auction houses, including the auction house located in Oneonta. From 1971 until his retirement in 1983, he was a real estate broker and co-owner with his wife of the real estate firm, Century 21 Koenig Realty in Oneonta. He was also an active member of the Otsego-Delaware Board of Realtors.
Charlie was a member of the Oneonta First Presbyterian Church, were he served as an elder and several committees; a 50 year member of the Oneonta Country club; member if the Oneonta Elks Club; and a past member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He was predeceased by his wife, 3 of his siblings and is survived by three sons, Thomas B. Koenig of Port Mayaca, FL, Carl J. and Patricia Koenig of Hot Springs, AR, and Dr. Paul and Elizabeth Koenig of Auburn, NY: Grandchildren Brant, Christopher, Cara, Dakota, Julius and John Paul; two great-grand daughters, Lauren and Eve; a sister Gertrude Kathman of Delhi and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family expresses their thanks and gratitude to the staff and management of the New York Memorial contributions State Veteran's Home, Oxford, New York for the kind and loving care provided Charlie.
The family will hold a private memorial service at their convenience.
