Obituary

ONEONTA –Dr. Orlando Lopes Legname, a Full Professor of Music at the State University of New York, Oneonta, passed away at home on Friday, December 5, 2014. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. He was born February 27, 1963 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the son of Orlando Legname and Angela Brait Lopes Legname.

Dr. Legname, a noted composer, conductor, and theorist, taught at the State University of New York, Oneonta for 15 years, where he served as the founder and Director of the Audio Arts Production Program, Director of the Chamber Orchestra, and Department Chair. Dr. Legname also served on the faculty of the University of Rome Tor Vegata, in the Master of Sonic Arts Program. In the past, he taught in the Music Technology Program at New York University and was Manager and Musical Director of ARTIUM Arts Center in São Paulo, where he served as Executive Producer, Arranger, and Music Director for numerous recordings, instructional videos, and theatrical plays.

Dr. Legname was noted for his innovative work on the development of new electronic music instruments, augmented conducting techniques, graphic music notation, and was also an Avid Certified Pro Tools Expert. He was recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Creative Activities, the Susan Sutton Smith Award for Academic Excellence, and the Academic Excellence Award for Innovative Uses of Instructional Technology.

In addition, Dr. Legname received numerous honors for his compositions, including the Walsum Award (First Prize) at the University of Maryland and the Best Music for Theater of 1990 Award from the prestigious APCA (São Paulo Art Critics Association) in Brazil. Dr. Legname's compositions have been performed in the United States, Italy, Ireland, Spain, and Brazil.

He authored a textbook titled Audio Arts Production (Erudition Books: North Chelmsford), a book chapter, "Searching for Semantics in Music: A Global Discourse," published in Imagining Globalization, and numerous articles and conference presentations on music composition, technology, and theory.

Legname earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Maryland. He had recently completed studies on augmented musicianship at the prestigious Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris.

Dr. Legname is survived by his loving wife, Ms. Anna Legname, a Rehabilitation Counselor who works at SUNY Oneonta; two beloved children, daughter Natalia, son Caio; his father, Orlando Legname; a brother, Jose Carlos Lopes Legname; two sisters, Maria Salete Legname de Paulo and Angela Christina Legname Barbour; his mother-in-law, Matilde Bezerra Lima, all of Brazil; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his mother.

Dr. Legname was proud to become an American Citizen on October 24, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Wednesday, December 10 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. There will be no calling hours and the interment will be in Brazil at the convenience of the family.
