Obituary

NEW LISBON – Pete was born in Twillingate, NFL, June 3, 1936, one of twin sons (brother, Dick) born to Dr. Sherman Jacobs and Helen Cawley Jacobs. After his father's residency the family settled in Oneonta. For most of his life Pete was active in many sports. He played baseball, football and especially basketball at Oneonta High School. He was quite a talented basketball player continuing to play in town teams and on traveling teams. In midlife he played more softball, playing in several leagues; pitcher was his position. He was also an avid bowler and bowled in League play at the Elks Club. Later, golf became his passion. His favorite course was Colonial Ridge where he once shot a hole-in-one (his friend Paul will verify that!).

Pete played his last nine holes at Baywood Greens in Long Neck, Delaware on Saturday, March 24, 2012. He played with his friend Paul Franolich a game they had both been looking forward to. They played a good game, had fun and both turned to put their clubs in their bags. Pete put away his club and collapsed. His friend administered CPR but Pete had left this life.

Pete spent his entire working career as a lineman at NYSE&G. He was proud of his craft and truly enjoyed the years and friends he had while working. He retired as a Chief Lineman in 1992 after 31 years.

Though Pete was raised and lived his first 30 years in the City of Oneonta, he adapted well to country life in New Lisbon where he and his wife Flo had a rural homestead. He will be truly missed, no longer there to share the work and rewards of their partnership.

Pete is survived by his wife, Flo Loomis; his son, Mike Jacobs and his companion, Cory O'Connor; his daughter-in-law, Angie Jacobs and grandsons, Bradley and Brett; his daughter, Kelly Jacobs-Smith, husband, Scott and granddaughter, Cassie, all of Niskayuna.

Peter was a lifetime member of the Oneonta Elks Club, a member of the Oneonta Vets Club and a member of the Oneonta High School Alumni Association. He graduated from Broome Community College and served in the United States Air Force.

Pete's body has been cremated and the ashes will be interred at the Mt. Vision Cemetery and on his homestead.

The family welcomes friends Friday, April 13, 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. A memorial gathering to celebrate Pete's life will follow at the Oneonta Elks Club, 84 Chestnut Street, downstairs in the dining area at 6:30 p.m. There will be an Elks Lodge of Sorrows Service at 7 p.m.

Gifts in Pete's memory may be made to either the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA. 02241-7005

Arrangements have been made with the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft star-shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.
