Obituary

ONEONTA – Philip C. Ashe, 73, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Phil was born January 5, 1937 in Unadilla, the son of Everett and Anne (Fuller) Ashe.

He married Mary Ann Diehl in Sidney in 1958.

Phil was a United States Army veteran from 1960 to 1962 serving in Germany and obtained the rank of sergeant.


He was a graduate of Oneonta High School and the State University of New York at Oneonta.

Phil worked at Schenevus Central School as an English teacher, Librarian and substitute school bus driver, for 30 years. He was very active with the Schenevus United Teachers Association, where he once served as president. Phil then was employed by Oneonta Public Transit for 8 years as a bus driver.

Phil was a member of the Delaware County Maple Producers, Pumpkin Hollow Maple, and active with the Cooperstown Farmers Market. Phil was a life member of the NRA and was a hunter safety instructor. He also was a swimming instructor and was a life guard at several local lakes and pools. Phil was a life long motorcycling enthusiastic, running with the "Retreads". He completed his sky diving training in 1966 in Greene, NY and has taken 75 solo jumps. Phil enjoyed leather crafts, and was very musically talented. He loved running the Riverside School store, building paper airplanes and doing the daily cross word puzzle. He enjoyed his summer vacations with family in Rockwood, Maine and lunches at the Stress Free Moose.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Ashe of Oneonta; a daughter, Ellie and her husband, Jon Anderson of Oneonta; a son, Charlie Ashe and his wife, Patty Lawson of East Meredith; grandsons, Andrew and Austin Anderson; a brother, Dave and wife, Pat Ashe of Oneonta; nephews, Harold and wife, Becky Ashe and Tim and wife, Kathy Ashe; a niece, Margaret Wicoff; special friends, Ronnie and Dorothy Beers; his doggie day care crew, Cabot, Noah and Olive, Jake and Chester and his beloved canine companion, Gretie.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Gene.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with military honors.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
