MILFORD - Phylis Jane Roe passed away unexpectedly at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown on March 1, 2010.
Phylis was born to Philip and Mildred Colwell on September 17, 1945 at Parshall Hospital in Oneonta, NY. She was raised primarily in Oneonta and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1963. In 1964 she married George Roe, with whom she had her only child, a son, George Roe Jr. (Joe) in 1965. At the age of 20 Phylis was hired at Mold-A-Matic, in Oneonta, where she worked the majority of her adult life, 44 years. In 1971 she began her life with her soul mate David Evans, until the Lord took her to rest last Monday afternoon.
Phylis was a wonderful woman, wife, companion, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She had several interests throughout her life which included cooking, baking, quilting, yard sales, scrap booking, tending to her garden and her flowers, going to the casino, traveling with her son and his family and watching NASCAR every Sunday afternoon and cheering on her favorite driver, Mark Martin. In earlier years, every weekend of every summer she enjoyed going to her camp with her family at the East Worcester Fish and Game Club, where everyone would enjoy fishing, cooking out, playing horseshoes and just relaxing. Phylis loved this quality family time more than anything. Later on, as a grandmother, she found great enjoyment in attending the extracurricular activities that her grandson, Dalton, was a part of, like concerts, plays and sports.
One of Phylis's greatest accomplishments in her life is her family, of which she took great pride. Anyone who knew Phylis knows that she was always a caretaker of others, always putting everyone else's needs before her own. She was a very loving, kind, caring person who was loved deeply by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Phylis was predeceased by her in -laws, Glen and Peggy Evans; her sister-in-law, Donna Holstead and step son, Daniel Evans.
Phylis is survived by her loving partner of 39 years, David Evans; his daughter in California, Rebecca Whiting; Phylis' beloved son, George Roe Jr. and his partner, Melissa Holliday and their son, Dalton Roe; her best friend and cherished sister, Louise Storey and her brother-in-law, Keith Storey; her nieces, Kim and Jenna Clancy and nephews, Chad and Dakota Lyons. There were also many friends who were near and dear to her heart; Joan Wench and Fred Packer, Carol Pidgeon and Judy Mastropole Marshall, Warren and Theresa Prentice, Barbara Watson Sastra, George and Garrett Roe and Carolyn Halbert, and neighbors Randy and Sue Hulbert.
Phylis Roe was unnaturally kind and everyone who knew her will remember that about her above everything else. Incredibly humble, and always with a smile on her face even in the worst of times and a laugh so infectious it could light up the whole room, she will always be missed and remembered lovingly and she will never be forgotten.
A private service will be held for family. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Maryland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Phylis Roe Music and Theatre Arts Scholarship Fund to Milford Central High School, c/o Linda Wenz, Treasurer, P.O. Box 237 Milford, NY 13807.
