EAST WORCESTER – Richard A. (Dick) Conklin, 63, passed away Tuesday,April 8, 2008 at VA Medical Center in Albany.
He was born December 1, 1944 in Oneonta, the son of Robert and Elda Mae (VanHoesen) Conklin.
Dick attended the Worcester Central School.
He enlisted in the United States Navy on September 26, 1962 and served in Vietnam. He received many medals and awards including, Bronze Stars, Vietnam Service Award, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and a Combat Action Ribbon. During his Navy career he served on many ships and was a Sonar Technician and a Radio Mechanic. After his honorable discharge on February 28, 1989, he returned to East Worcester where he worked for a local lumber mill for a short time.
Dick spent his retirement enjoying the company of family and friends,watching golf, feeding the birds and mowing lawns.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Hanvey of Montgomery, AL, Margaret Herrala of Mountain Top, PA, and Hazel Jenkins of Cobleskill; a cousin, Charles VanHoesen of Middletown, CT; nieces and nephews,Rachel Liscomb, James, John, Clyde, Randall and Stephen Wilcox,
Kimberly Birsen, Gerald Jenkins, and Angela Newton; several
great-nieces and great-nephews, including, great-niece, Kristy Wilcox and her fiancé Joe Zabelicky, who had been loving caregivers for the past months.
He was predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Leona.
Calling hours will be at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in
Worcester on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 1 p.m. to the memorial
service at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Herrala, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Mountain Top, PA, officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at the East Worcester Cemetery.
