ONEONTA – Richard Frank Gustafson, retired SUCO mathematics professor, died on July 4, 2011 at Robinson Terrace, Stamford, NY from Alzheimer's disease.
He was born January 13, 1932 in St. Paul, MN, growing up in Manchester, IA. He attended Western Military Academy, Alton, IL, graduating from Boulder Colorado High School. After one year at the University of Colorado, he was employed by the Gamble-Skogmo Corporation, later purchasing the Gamble Store in Buffalo, WY. While there he was a member of the Congregational Church's Board of Trustees, a charter member of Toastmaster's International Club, a member of the A.F.& A.M. Anchor Lodge #7, 4-H club leader and later, a Boy Scout troop leader on the Appalachian Trail.
He had a Bachelor of Science in Education, major in mathematics, was from the University of Central Arkansas, Conway, AR; the MA in mathematics from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, and PhD in mathematics from Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY, his field of specialization was Knot Theory.
He joined the SUCO faculty in 1965 and was a mathematics professor until his 1995 retirement.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, a 32 year member of the church choir, the basketball coach for the Presbyterian Church in the 1975-1976 YMCA Church league, a Cub Scout Webelos leader, a youth soccer coach and a PeeWee football coach and referee.
He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Lynn Robinson; his children, Charles and wife, Cynthia, their daughter, Christina of San Diego, CA; Karl of San Diego, CA; Karen and her husband, David Greer, their daughter, Heather of Oklahoma City, OK; Christopher and wife, Marti and children, Ellen, Jack and Owen of Oneonta; and Philip and wife, Tracii and sons, Andrew, Sean and Liam of Grand Junction, CO; a brother, Karl E. Gustafson also survives.
A memorial graveside service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Montfort, officiating. The Oneonta Masonic Lodge will be also be participating in the service.
