Obituary

ONEONTA – Richard J. Mead, 82, passed away in the loving arms of his wife on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born December 9, 1928 in Oneonta, the son of James Richard and Helena (Fuller) Mead.

Dick graduated from Oneonta High School in 1947. He then served in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1950.

He married Aneilia Blowers on September 26, 1948 at the old Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta.

Dick owned and operated JR Mead & Son, a meat processing and smokehouse in Oneonta until 1972, when he moved the business to Winney Hill Road. After retirement he helped with his son's business at Mead's Reloading and Gun Supply.

Dick was an avid hunter and shooter. He took many hunting trips out West and especially enjoyed his time in Wyoming. He also enjoyed flying his airplane. Dick and his wife, traveled at great deal on his Harley Davison, attending many rallies and camping along the way with friends.

He was a life member of the NRA, a member of the Laurens American Legion, the American Legion Riders, and the Retreads.

Dick was an easy going man who was liked by his customers and friends. He will be dearly missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Aneilia Mead; his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Sharon Mead; his grandson, Andy Mead and several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dogs.

He was predeceased by his sister, Florine Mead Baird.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, Chaplain at A.O. Fox Hospital, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Interment will take place at a later date at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
