Benson, Sr.
May 6, 1941 – September 23, 2018
Robert Frederick Benson Sr., 77, from Decatur, NY passed away peacefully on September 23, 2018 due to complications with ALS.
Bob was born May 6, 1941, a lifelong resident of Decatur and dairy/beef farmer for many years. He also worked at Maple Grove Cemetery until the effects of ALS would not allow him to. Throughout his years he served as Decatur Highway Superintendent, worked Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park, at Glimmerglass State Park, Ommegang Brewery, and Worcester Creamery. Bob was a member of Worcester Grange, Tri County Dance and Social Club in Oneonta and Sidney, NRA Member and Percheron Horse Association. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, raising his beefers and horses.
Bob was predeceased by his children, Brandon Benson and Lisa (Benson) Trombley; sister, Shirley (Benson) Brower, her husband, Charles "Red" Brower; brother in law, Herb Siems; parents, Bert and Emma (Clarke) Benson.
Bob is survived by his sister, Jean (Benson) Siems of Oneonta, NY; his children, Pamela Savage (Chris) of Delhi, NY, Robert Benson Jr. (Heather) of Springfield, NY, Sherry Rose (Ben) of Front Royal, VA, Dean Benson (Karen) of Delanson, NY, Bert Benson (Tara) of Otego, NY; a son-in-law, Gary Trombley of Breakabeen, NY; grandchildren, Destiny, Chrystal, Faith, Rhys, Brady, Chase, Lorelei, Brooke, Reid, Riley. A very special friend, that helped and loved him through all his challenges Alison White. Good friends, The Peeters: Marty, Dana, Dick, Janette; Delphine Kerzick; Pete Conte; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Calling Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. with the memorial service 10 a.m., with the Rev. Judith Thistle, officiating Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Heller & Skinner Funeral Home, 155 Main St., Worcester. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.
In lieu of flowers Bob's wishes were that contributions be made to Worcester Emergency Squad; ALS; American Cancer Society; or Catskill Area Hospice.
