DAVENPORT - Robert John Stedtler, Sr., aka "RJ", 78, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at his home after a long illness.
He was born January 31, 1931 in Hackensack, NJ, the son of Frederick and Helen (Margreither) Stedtler.
He was formerly married to Roberta Ann Price.
He served in the New Jersey National Guard with the Service Battery 165th AFA Bn, 1950 and was a United States Army veteran, serving in the 23rd ORD Co., 1951 to 1953.
RJ was a Davenport resident for more than 20 years and previously lived in Paramus, NJ for more than 50 years.
He retired from the Operating Engineers Local 825 and was the owner of Charlotte Creek Excavating.
RJ was a former member of the Special Officer Paramus Police Department, the New Jersey State Fireman's Association, the Paramus Fire Department Exempt and Relief Association, the Paramus Fire Department Company No. 4, the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No 592 and the Otsego County R/C Flyers.
He is survived by his loving companion, Carol Levenson of Davenport; a son, Robert J. Stedtler, Jr. and wife, Cheryl of Branchburg, NJ, three daughters, Susan F. Stedtler of Allentown, PA, Sharon Marsh and husband, Keith of Park Ridge, NJ and Cheryl Laverty of Elmwood Park, NJ; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 niece and 2 nephews. He will also be missed by Howard, Ben and Art Levenson and their families.
He was predeceased by his older brother, Fred Stedtler Jr., also of Davenport.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the East Meredith Fire House, 6192 County Highway 10, East Meredith, NY, with a reception immediately following the service.
A memorial service in Paramus, NJ will be announced at a later date.
