ONEONTA — Robert James Wells, 73, passed away October 18, 2026, at his home surrounded by family and friends.

He was born January 8, 1953, in Oneonta, the son of John H. Wells Sr. and Adelaide (Escher) Wells. 

Bobby attended Valley View Elementary School, Bugee School, and graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1972. He worked at Loblaws Grocery Store during and after high school, and maintained friendships with a group of former employees throughout his life. At a young age, Bob developed a passion for building and construction, becoming self-taught and eventually self-employed. He had a great eye for detail and was a true perfectionist, which led to many successful subcontracting opportunities. He worked hard and always had time for a smile, a joke or whatever you needed to help brighten your day. Bob was also intrigued by flying and took great pride in volunteering at the Greater Oneonta Airport, assisting with lawn care and facility maintenance. Although he took flying lessons, he never officially obtained his pilot's license. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors and hunting. Bob will be missed for his laughter, his empathy and his caring. 

He is survived by his brothers, John H. Wells Jr. and William D. Wells, both of Long Beach, CA, and James Richard "JR" Wells of New York City; his nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Michelle, Deborah, David, Rich, and Aaron; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, and cousins. 

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Marilyn Gerowe; and his brothers, David Brandt and Geoffery Escher Brandt.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with the memorial service at 3 p.m., on Sunday, October 25, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. The Rev. Judith Thistle will be officiating.
