ONEONTA – Robert Z. Whiting Sr., 66, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born November 3, 1939 in Oneonta, the son of Zeno and Pearl (Marble) Whiting.
Bob married Carol Marino Kopf on March 24, 1987.
He was employed at S&N Gas Company in Colliersville for over 20 years, and then worked for Petro Lane Gas Company in Margaretville for several years. He retired from the Oneonta School District where he was a custodian at the Center Street School for 10 years.
Bob was an avid collector of Lionel Trains and other unique collectable items including local memorabilia. He especially enjoyed participating in the various train and car shows in the region. He restored vintage automobiles and was a member of the Reminiscers Car Club.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Whiting of Oneonta; his mother, Pearl Whiting of Cooperstown; his children, Donald and his wife, Robyn Whiting of Albany, Robin and her husband, Dennis McTighe of Davenport Center, Denise and her husband, Jeff Smith of Otego, and Robert Whiting Jr. of West Davenport, a sister, Donna Z. Whiting of California; a niece, Rebecca Whiting; his step-grandchildren, Brian and his wife, Katie Kopf of North Carolina, Chris Kopf and his companion, Darlene Austin of Davenport, Lee Kopf and his companion, Lori Button of Unadilla; grandchildren, Sheena and Shane Crandall, Nathan Whiting, Jessica Clark, Brooke Mitchell; step-grandchildren, Brett Austin, Christopher and Corey Kopf, Maegan Herringshaw, Alicia and Cassie Kopf; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father and a sister, Ethel M. Johnson.
Calling hours will be held 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Davenport Cemetery.
