ONEONTA – Roger E. Ackley, Sr., 71, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 17, 2014 at A.O.Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta with his family at his side.
He was born October 3, 1942 in Utica, NY the son of Harry and Leona (Johnson) Ackley.
Roger married Carol Ann Dimmick on July 21, 1962 at the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta.
He was employed by Scintilla (Amphenol) and the D&H Railroad for many years. After which he moved on to become an employee of Our local phone company. He retired as the Head of Corporate Real Estate at Verizon Telephone Co., Oneonta, NY after 37 ½ years of employment.
Roger was a very dedicated man. Roger was a member of the 6th Ward Athletic Club, the Oneonta Moose Lodge, and the Telephone Pioneers. He was formerly a coach for Little League baseball, Pee Wee Football, and a volunteer for the Boys Scouts of America. He was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening, making maple syrup and loved all animals, especially his dogs and chickens. Roger, better known as Grampa Dot, was a true family man always wanting to be involved when he could. He also enjoyed his many vacations with his family.
He is survived by his beloved family; his wife of 51 years, Carol Ann Ackley; their children, Roger Ackley II and his wife, Maryellen of Oneonta, Patricia Ann and her husband, Richard Rock of Oneonta, and Rodney Ackley and his wife, Lara of Oneonta. He also has seven grandchildren, Raven, Devin, Roger, Ryan, Riley, Mel, Jade and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Alexia. He also has several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Dennis Ackley.
Calling hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.The funeral service will be 5 p.m., with the Rev. T. Norman Moran, retired, officiating. There will be a gathering after the service at 6 p.m., at the 6th Ward Athletic Club, on West Broadway, Oneonta.
A private burial will take place at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery later in the spring.
