Worcester - Ruth I. All passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Otsego Manor where she had been a resident since August 2009. She was 94.
She was born Ruth Irene Spencer at home in the Village of Maryland, NY on October 23, 1917 to Channing H. and Ursula (Decker) Spencer. She had been the last living Spencer to have been born on the Spencer Tract (within the town of Maryland) which was received by the family for services in the American Revolution. Although she attended Worcester High School through the eleventh grade, she graduated from Oneonta High School in 1936 because her family had moved. She attended Oneonta Normal School (SUNY) for one year.
She was twice married. First to H. Howard Potter on October 23, 1937 in Oneonta. Mr. Potter passed away in 1946 shortly after returning from service in the United States Army in Europe. On August 16, 1950 she married Roger E. All of Worcester. Together they built a new home on the All family farm in the town of Westford.
She enjoyed a wide variety of activities including cooking and baking; sewing, knitting and tatting; genealogy and history; playing cards and jigsaw puzzles; fishing. She enjoyed singing and in the early years of WDOS had sung on the air when the station was broadcast from Bresee's Dep't store. As well, she was a 50+ year member of the Worcester Woman's Club where she had served as President. She was a charter member of the Worcester Historical Society serving as Treasurer for several years. One of her greatest enjoyments was being a Grange member. She had been a member for 75 years having joined Oneonta Grange in 1937, moving her membership to Worcester Grange in 1954; and was also a member of the County, State and National Grange. She served in several capacities at different levels of the Grange. She was Secretary of Otsego County Pomona Grange #16 for 54 years, Ceres of the NY State Grange 1971-72, and had been Secretary, Lecturer and Master of Worcester Grange. She had also taught Sunday School at the former Oneonta Plains Methodist Church. Although she had attended many different churches in her lifetime she had last been a member of Second Baptist Church of Worcester; and had attended Schenevus United Methodist Church most recently before moving to the Manor. She was a "closet" fan of the New York Yankees. Also, she took great pride in having the same license plate number on her car for 65 years; "KP-55" will remain in her family.
Ruth, along with several others, was instrumental in the reopening of Morris/Otsego County Fair in 1945-46 when the fairgrounds were purchased by many Otsego County Grange members, after being closed since 1942.
In her working life, she had worked at Kresge's on the lunch counter; Clare Miller's GLF store in West Oneonta as bookkeeper, also keeping the Supervisor's books for the Town of Oneonta since Mr. Miller was Town Supervisor. Bookkeeper at Baker Hardware, Oneonta. On becoming a farm wife, she worked with her husband on the farm and then worked at Worcester Central School and Key Bank, Worcester from which she retired in 1982.
