Ruth Wood Hartley's Obituary
Worcester - Ruth Wood Hartley, 88, died November 23, 2007 at her home in South Worcester where she had been a resident since 1950.
Ruth Natalie Wood was born in Brooklyn on April 14, 1919, daughter of Howard and Alice (Ralph) Wood.
She married Howson Austin Hartley in Mineola on October 9, 1939.
She was educated at Wells College and SUNY Oneonta. An accomplished pianist she often accompanied her mother and husband in concert. She was later organist at the South Worcester Methodist Church.
For some years she was active in club work. She was president of the old South Worcester Woman's Club, president of the Worcester Woman's Club, president of the Otsego Federation of Women's Club and president of the Otsego County Woman's Republican Club. In the latter capacity she had occasion to work with Governor Nelson Rockefeller. She later was employed at the J.C. Penney store in downtown Oneonta and then for many years at Bresee's store in Oneonta.
She was a 20 year member of the Catskill Choral Society and a member of the Board of the Oneonta Concert Association. She was for over 40 years a staunch supporter of the Catskill Symphony Orchestra.
Ruth is survived by her husband; one daughter, Victoria Hartley Rickard of Schenevus; three sons, Christopher Hartley of Cobleskill, Scott Hartley and his wife, Linda of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Neill Hartley and his wife, Robin of Havertown, PA; also grandchildren, Amanda Rickard Hagzan of Albany and her husband Kieran, Alicia Rickard of Albany and Austin Rickard of Manassas, VA. Also Meghan Hartley of New York City, Jennifer Hartley of Ann Arbor, Alexander Hartley of Havertown and Kyle Hartley of Havertown and one great grandson, Nathan Rickard of Manassas.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Leslie A. Hartley.
There will be no funeral or calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
