Obituary

Worcester - Shirley Anne (Marshall) Engler was born November 9, 1942 in Sweetsburg, Quebec Canada; the first child of the late Raymond and Henrietta Marshall.

In 1953, at the age of 11, Shirley and her parents, along with her sister Joyce and brother Raymond, immigrated to the United States and settled on Long Island in East Northport.  This displeased Shirley greatly and legend has it she cut off her blond ringlets in an act of defiance. She was eventually able to acclimate and establish relationships and made her way through school. On September 3, 1960, Shirley married her high school sweetheart, John Joseph Engler. They had 3 children, Timothy, Donna and Steven, before relocating to upstate NY, following in her parents' footsteps. They first resided in Sharon Springs before moving to Worcester where her and John have resided for the last 40 years.

Shirley was incredibly proud to earn her Associates Degree in Business Management and was a long-time store manager, first for Fay's Drugs and then Eckerd Drugs before retiring in 2002. However, being a Scorpio through and through, she could sit still and embarked on a second career with Walmart in Oneonta until 2020 when she finally retired for good. She was a hard-working and dedicated employee, creating bonds and friendships with many of her co-workers over the years.

Above all else, Shirley cherished her family. She was the true matriarch and there isn't a thing she wouldn't do or give for her family. Over the years she transformed from one role to the next with ease and love. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She welcomed everyone in to her home whether it was for a quick visit and coffee in the dining room or an extended stay for months or even years.

Shirley enjoyed ice cream sodas with chocolate ice cream, listening to music, especially Elvis Presley, creating art with her drawings and doodles, watching game shows with her husband or a good suspense movie and rooting for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, much to most of her family's displeasure. It didn't matter if it was your 1st, 50th or 23rd birthday, she insisted the whole family gather at her house for cake, ice cream and presents. She cherished having her family together for these celebrations and other holiday events. She created lasting memories and traditions, many of which her family will continue long in to the future.

Shirley is lovingly survived by her husband of 62 years, John "Jack" Engler of Worcester, NY; her children, Timothy Engler and Donna (Malcolm "Jay") Wood, all of Worcester, NY and Steven (Rochelle) Engler of Laurens, NY; her grandchildren, Nicole (Thomas) Lenci of Islip, NY, Kyle (Cody) Wood of Worcester, NY, Steven (Macy) Engler II of Oneonta, NY, Sarah Engler of Watkins Glen, NY, Heather Engler of Laurens, NY, John "JT" Engler of Canastota, NY and Isabella Alger of Oneonta, NY and her great grandchildren Gabriella and Samuel Engler, Gabriel and Lucas Lenci, Atticus Washburn, Beckett and Alice Wood, Aaniyah Smith and Elsie, Kyle, Maryanne and Brooklyn Alger. She is also survived by her sister,Joyce "Betty" Bohne of Watervliet, NY; her brother, Raymond (Catherine) Marshall of Spring Hill, FL and brothers-in-law, Thomas Engler of Dunedin, FL and Albert (Grace) Engler of Cutler Bay, FL as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout the US and Canada.
