Obituary

SCHENEVUS – Shirley A. Rode, 82, went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2020, she was home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born September 2, 1937 in Milford, the daughter of George and Jenella (Cole) Umbach.

She graduated from Andrew S. Draper Central School in Schenevus.

Shirley married Henry Rode on February 6, 1960 at her home in Schenevus.

She was a faithful and active member at the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, where she held various positions over many years.  She was a member of the Young at Heart and the Lunch Bunch in Worcester.

Shirley enjoyed working at the Schenevus Central School as a crossing guard and loved the children she saw daily.  She also worked as a housekeeper.

Shirley was always willing to help friends and family with a ride to appointments or errands.  She loved to bake cookies, especially for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Connie (Mark) Schultes, Peter (Millie Rivera) Rode and Linda (Harry) Hager; grandchildren, David Schultes, Emily (Mark) Crosby, Jordan Rode, Ryan, Trevor, and Casey Hager, Tiffany and Travis Tompkins; siblings, Victor Umbach and Imogene (James) Boone; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry on July 11, 1986; her siblings, Marian Griffith and Ellaner Hubbard as well as her best friend, Linda Grosfent.

A special thank you to the staff on Unit 3 at A.O. Fox Nursing Home and Helios Care for their kindness and compassion.

A public graveside service will be 1 p.m., June 16, 2020 at the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Johnson, officiating.  Please be mindful of social distancing, wearing a face covering, and to bring your own chair if needed.

As per Shirley's request, a celebration of her life will take place at the First Baptist Church in Schenevus when the restrictions are lifted to having an open public church service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Baptist Church, PO Box 187, Schenevus, NY 12155.
