Obituary

ONEONTA - Stanley Chatis passed away at home on Sunday, December 3, 2023.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 1, 1937 to Monya and Benjamin Chatis. He was one of three siblings. In high school (Olney High School) and college (Temple University) he competed on the gymnastics team.

He married Mary Tuthill on June 21, 1975 in Brooklyn, New York. They met at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was a physical therapist and she was a nurse. In 1976, Stan, Mary and infant daughter Corey moved to Oneonta, New York. Corey was Stan's pride and joy. Mary was the great love and pride of his life; she took tremendous care of him as his health declined.

Stan loved to travel and had a great sense of adventure. In his twenties, he motorcycled through Europe. He had also traveled to South America, Japan, Thailand, Africa, and India. He had many hobbies and interests over the years including martial arts, cars, and fine watches, clothes, and food. He loved to learn and experience new things. One of his favorite musicians was Van Morrison. He read the New York Times every day and would frequently mail clippings of articles to loved ones to let them know he was thinking of them. Stan started competitive powerlifting in his fifties, which became a many decades-long passion. He won numerous national and world competitions. He was a generous mentor in the gym, training and supporting many aspiring lifters, including his daughter. He cherished his Thursday night dinners with his friends. Most of all, he will be remembered for his great love for his family and friends. He was deeply interested in those whom he loved and sought to understand what was important to them. He gave generously of his time and attention.   A special thank you to our neighbors Jim, Sandy and Joe Terrano for their friendship and help over the years.

He is predeceased by his sister, Rita Chatis, and his nephew, Scott Portner (Laurie Portner). He is survived by his wife, Mary Tuthill; his daughter, Corey Chatis; his sister, Brenda Jakubowicz (Bernie Jakubowicz); his nieces, Andrea Portner and Mikhal Kofman; his nephews Keith Portner (Gina Money) and Derek Furman; his great nieces Nicole Malanchuk (Roman Malanchuk), Slone Portner, Paige Portner, and Annie Portner; his great-nephews Storm Portner (Caroline Christianson), Zack Portner, and Sam Portner; and many other extended family and friends.

He lived life well and will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be planned in the spring of 2024.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or your favorite charity.

Condolences may be sent to, www.lhpfuneralhome.com, the website of Oneonta's only family-owned funeral home, Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono at 51 Dietz Street.
