LAURENS – Stanley W. Garlick, 82, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the Otsego Manor in Cooperstown.
He was born April 18, 1929 to Clark and Floris (Palmer) Garlick in the Goodyear Lake area, Town of Milford.
He was married, July 26, 1952, to Margaret F. Fredenburgh of Gilboa. They resided in the Town of Laurens from 1952 to 2011. In 1950, Stan was drafted into the Army, where he spent a short period of time before he was medically discharged.
Stan was an auto mechanic at several garages in Oneonta and at Schuman's Truck Sales and Service. He was a school bus mechanic and driver at Laurens Central School for many years, retiring in 1995. After retiring, he continued to drive school bus for several years.
He was a NASCAR fan and also enjoyed restoring and showing antique vehicles. He owned three, a 1939 Ford pick-up, a 1939 Ford ton and a half stake body, and a 1940 Lincoln Zephyr. He was a member of the Reminiscers Antique and Special Interest Car Club. He was president of the club for many years, retiring as president in 2007. Stan and Margaret were members of the Lincoln Zephyr Owner's Club (LZOC) Eastern Division. They enjoyed attending many of the annual meets at various locations. In 2002, the meet was held in the Oneonta area under the directions of Stan and Margaret.
They also enjoyed trips by Eastern Travel Oneonta Bus Lines.
In his younger days, he was a member of Goodyear Lake Grange and at one time worked with the Laurens and Portlandville Boy Scout troop. He had been a member of the Laurens Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years.
In 1960, Stanley and Millard Dutcher planned and constructed the Edgewood Golf Course near Gilbert Lake, which they and their wives operated. It was sold in 1975.
Stan is survived by his wife, Margaret; a sister Shirley (Bruce) Baldwin of Fultonham; a sister-in-law, Jane Garlick; a nephew, several nieces, and several cousins, including Richard Garlick of Goodyear Lake and many friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Philip and 2 sisters, Glenda and Cynthia.
All who wish may call from Noon to 2 p.m., with the funeral at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Fournier, pastor at the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.
