Oneonta – Stephen Neal Johnson, Sr., 83, died on December 4, 2022 at his home.

He was born in Cooperstown on October 25, 1939.  He was the son of Harry and Helen (Shutts) Johnson.

He married Irene M. Northup on August 8, 1959.  They were married for 61 years.

While in High School, he worked for the Schatzsky Men's Clothing Store part time.  After graduation, he worked at Homer Folks Hospital from 1960 to 1962 when he went into business for a time with his father.  They owned Dauley and Wright Monument Business and the Oneonta Bowling Alley.  In 1966 we went to work at Bendix (later known as Amphenol) in Sidney, NY.  He retired from there in 2001.

He was an active member of the Oneonta Southside Wesleyan Church.  Through the years he held many offices in the church.  Steve's big passion was garage sales and selling what he found at the garage sales.  His greatest joy was having kids, grandkids and great grandkids come and spend time with him.  He loved to sit on the back porch and watch the birds and wildlife.

Stephen is survived by three children, Stephen Jr. and wife, Lori Johnson, Harry James and wife, Analee Johnson, Susan (Johnson) Hitchcock; his grandchildren, Christopher and Michelle Johnson, Matthew and Erin Johnson, Douglas and Teresa Johnson, Jill and Joel Davis, Rebecca and Joe Evans, Jason Hitchcock, Jacob Hitchcock and Shannon Finch; his great-grandchildren, Hayley Martin, James, Quinn, Harper, Teyton, and Jennifer Johnson, Dylan Moore and Colton and Hunter Davis; his brothers-in-law, Glenn and wife, Linda Northup and James and wife, Frances Northup; his sister-in-law, Mary Jane and husband, Larry Truax; his special nephew, Timothy Northup and many other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene M. Johnson; his parents, Harry and Helen Johnson; parents-in-law, James and Tressa Northup; his aunt, Anna Johnson; his great-grandson, Caanan Davis; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Linda Northup; and his son-in-law, Wayne Hitchcock.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 8, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eric Santamont officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.
