Obituary

ONEONTA – Susan Dunn Routek, 68, passed away at her residence on August 13, 2025.

She was born September 2, 1956, in Oneonta, the daughter of John K. and Marguerite D. (Denney) Dunn.

A graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1974, Susan continued her education by earning degrees in History, Education Administration, and Business Administration from Skidmore College, UCCA, Briggs Lumber College, and Katharine Gibbs College.

Susan’s professional career included roles at Upstate Home for Children (Springbrook), Custom Electronics, and Planned Parenthood, where she worked in accounting, medical records, and administration. She was currently working at Fenimore Art Museum, until her diagnosis.

She also served as a Liaison for Otsego County HEAP, a Welfare Coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant for various nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Throughout her life, Susan was a dedicated volunteer. Beginning in high school and college, she gave her time to the Upstate Home, local nursing homes, and UCCA; later in life, she was a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels. A lifelong lover of music, she studied piano under her grandmother, the accomplished Christine Dunn.

In the winter of 1983, Susan met Jerome (Jerry) H. Routek, a highly gifted accomplished artist, and creative spirit. They were married at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta in November 1984. Together, they enjoyed traveling the world, vacationing, and scouting out auction houses, artists and antique shows. Susan also supported Jerry in his business, Premium Painting Plus, until he lost his battle with cancer in February 2011.

Susan was predeceased by her parents; her brother, David; and her aunt and uncle, Mary and Leslie Hemans.

Susan and Jerry will be laid to rest with her parents at Riverside Cemetery in Oneonta. Per her wishes, there will be no public service or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart of the Catskill Humane Society, the Delaware Humane Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
