SCHENEVUS – Thomas G. Whitbeck, 59, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 peacefully at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born February 9, 1951 in Hancock, the son of Clifton and Mary (Davis) Whitbeck.
Tom was a graduate of Franklin Central School, Class of 1969 and SUNY Delhi, Class of 1971 majoring in Water Resources.
Tom joined the Peace Corps spending time in Kenya from 1972 to 1974 working in the Water Department. He assisted in Dam Construction Units in Northeastern Province for 8 months. He took over the Range Water office in charge of the North Eastern Province Borehole Equipping Team. The team's function was to construct boreholes in remote areas to provide water for nomadic Somalis and their camels and cattle.
He married Barbara Cooley on June 19, 1976 in Canandaigua.
Tom worked for the Oneonta Water Plant for 11 years and was proud to be a NYS 1-A Filtration Plant Water System Operator. On December 3, 1992 he opened the Tom Whitbeck's Water Laboratory in Schenevus. Tom was New York State and Federal certified. His business served a four county area, having hundreds of loyal and cherished customers, whom he considered friends. His business became his life and passion.
Tom was a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge #592.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Whitbeck of Schenevus; his father, Clifton Whitbeck of Franklin; brother, Jim (Robin) Whitbeck of Unadilla; sister, Gloria (Jack) Callahan of Unadilla; nieces and nephews, Rhonda and Brad, Matthew and Bryan, and Jennifer and Jessica.
He was predeceased by his mother, and a brother, David Whitbeck.
Tom was cremated. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. to Noon, with a Masonic Service at Noon, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.
