MARYLAND – VeLane "Bookie" Bookhout, 97, passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Focus at Otsego.
She was born May 17, 1918 in Franklin, the daughter of Frank C. and Gladys (DeLong) McNutt.
She attended a one room school (The Blue School) as well as the former Kellogg School before graduating from Franklin Central School in 1936. She went onto Beauty School in Binghamton and practiced in Franklin prior to working at Scintilla during the war.
She married Kenneth Bookhout in a triple wedding with Edward and Eldora Sickler and Frances and Richard Taylor in July 27, 1940. Bookie and Ken lived in East Meredith for a short time before moving to Maryland in 1952. Kenneth passed away on August 1, 1992. They were married for 52 years.
Bookie worked at Newberry's and Rudolph's Jewelry Store before joining Bresee's Department Store, where she worked for 35 years. At one time she was the President of the Bresee's Clerks Association.
Bookie was a member of the former Maryland Community Club, the former Schenevus Women's Club, the Oneonta Business Women's Club, Schenevus United Methodist Church, The National Society of the Daughter's of the American Revolution, a State Officer of New York State DAR's, Regent of the Iroquois Chapter of the DAR's, the VFW Auxiliary in Schenevus, the American Legion Auxiliary of Worcester, the seniors "Young at Heart", the Susquehanna Senior Citizens of Milford and the Schenevus Grange. Bookie also served on the Election Board for many years and was the Democratic Committeeman for the Maryland Area. She enjoyed family gatherings and social events. She was interested in family ancestry, history, music and loved to travel.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Barbara (Peeters) Bookhout of Maryland; grandchildren, Brian (Michele) Bookhout of Schenevus, Brenda (Joe) Stahl of Delanson, Bonnie (Scott) Gray of Delanson, and Bruce (Dawn) Bookhout of Laurens; 10 great-grandchildren, Brianna, Mikayla, Taylor, Mikenzie, Jakob, Evan, Connor, Travis, Alyson, and Tara; her in-laws, Louise Glacken, Doris McNutt and Bob and Wanda Bookhout; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins and a longtime friend, Marge French.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; son, Thomas; sister, Frances "Bud" Taylor; and a brother, Thomas McNutt.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 10 am to the funeral service at 11 am at the Schenevus United Methodist Church, Main Street, with the Rev. Kathy Brumbaugh, officiating.
The burial will be private at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.
