Obituary

Westford - William G. Platt, 80, passed away, peacefully, on September 20, 2023 at his home.

He was born August 21, 1943 at Fox Hospital in Oneonta, to Clarence D. Platt and Alice (Horn) Platt.

Bill lived in Milford until 1958 and  moved to Cooperstown.  He attended both Milford and Cooperstown Schools.

On March 18, 1963 he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany until March 1, 1965.  He was honorably discharged February 28, 1969.

Bill worked at various jobs.  In 1969 he became employed F/T by Otsego County Highway Department, retiring in 1998.

He married Louisa M. "Mary Lou/Honey" Hundt January 3, 1970.  They have lived in the same house in Westford since their wedding.  After retirement, they enjoyed traveling and camping.

Bill was a member of Milford American Legion 1566, Cooperstown American Legion 579, Otsego County 40/8 and Schenevus AMVETS 2752.  He served as Milford Post Commander, Otsego County Commander, 6th District Commander, Department Vice Commander for the 5th and 6th District, and also as Department Commander's Aide three times. In 2022, Bill received the Otsego County American Legion Lifetime Achievement Award.  An honor he was proud of.  He was a past member of Westford Fire Department and enjoyed participating in firematics.  He also was a member of the East Worcester Fish & Game Club and Schenevus Archery Club.

He is survived by his wife;  his sister, Alice (Don) Roseboom of Georgia; sister-in-law, Gloria Platt of Georgia; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his best friend, his side-kick Onyx, or as Bill claimed "the best dog he ever had".

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Don Platt; sister, Evelyn Platt; niece, Becky Platt and nephew, Daryl Platt.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 30 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. with the service starting at 1 p.m. at the Heller & Skinner Funeral Home, 155 Main St., Worcester.  The American Legion Chaplain and the Rev. Judith Thistle will be officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at the Westford Cemetery.
